Photo booths have become a fixture at wedding receptions. With guests so used to crowding in front of an iPad with props, how do you make your photo booth experience stand out? These are four of my favorite wedding photo booth alternatives. They’re sure to make your reception memorable. You’ll get some sweet keepsakes out of them, too!
4 Traditional Wedding Photo Booth Alternatives
1. A Video Booth
Why stop at preserving your guests’ smiles when you could have their voices and well wishes, too? A video photo booth allows your guests to record a video on an iPad.
In the Buffalo area, Stately Photos offers The Stately Social, a video photo booth for wedding receptions. Some of my clients built a photo booth and hired The Stately Social to record guests’ videos. The technology is easy to use and offers the option for instant sharing. That way your guests can walk away with a keepsake, too.
One of my favorite things about this wedding photo booth alternative is that it can serve as a digital guestbook. You can include prompts in your photo booth to encourage guests to contribute the way they would to a written book.
Here are some prompts you can use for a video guest book:
Leave a message for [Partner 1] and [Partner 2] to read on their first anniversary!
The secret to a happy marriage is…
What’s your favorite memory with us?
It’s pretty cool to see your guests get emotional as they share their love with you!
2. Live Mini Paintings
This is the most unconventional wedding photo booth alternatives on this list. Maybe you’ve seen a live painter at a wedding. Sometimes marriers will hire an artist to paint their ceremony or first dance.
With mini portraits, a painter can do quick paintings that capture your guests’ essence. These paintings tend to be less detailed and more impressionistic. (That’s how the artist fits so many in during your reception.) Your guests will appreciate these paintings more than a generic wedding favor, too.
Lake Studios offers this service in New England and beyond.
3. Vintage Photo Booth
Personally, I love wedding photo booth alternatives that call up instant nostalgia. A vintage photo booth does exactly that. It’s less commonplace than an iPad but still user friendly. For some of us, it brings us back to carefree days kicking around the mall with our friends. It’s a fun energy to bring to your reception!
In Buffalo and Western New York, you can rent vintage photo booths from Classic Photo Booth and Pop Shop Photobooth. Pop Shop mixes modern and classic elements to get a vintage look with contemporary technology. Classic Photo Booth offers non-digital booths built in the twentieth century. It’s not an experience you get very often anymore.
4. Airstream Photo Booth
If you really want to take your guests back in time, you can climb aboard an Airstream photo booth. You may have seen these vintage trailers repurposed for weddings. Most come outfitted with cute decor. They’re unique places to snap a few photos with guests. You can pose for some portraits there as well.
Of all the wedding photo booth alternatives, an Airstream photo booth probably requires the most space. You’ll want to make sure your venue can accommodate you with a place to park and set up adjacent to your reception.
Rose and Dale Photo Co. is an Airstream photo booth company based in Upstate New York. They refurbished the interior of a 1960s Airstream with hardwood flooring and vintage furniture. In addition to the Airstream itself, Rose and Dale Photo Co. provides custom backdrops and photo printouts.
